The citizen’s academy gives our citizens first-hand information on how and why the department operates, and examines the culture of police work and the organization. It provides an excellent opportunity for the citizens to interact with department members. The Citizens’ Academy is NOT an offer of employment, but a volunteer organization and program to educate those members of our community who want to hear information regarding law enforcement and the Parsons Police Department right from the source.
The Police Citizens’ Academy (PCA) is not intended to make citizens into police officers, it was however developed to encourage citizens to learn more about their police department. Participants will become familiar with the actual role of the police and, in turn, police officers will benefit from the wealth of knowledge that citizens can provide about their community.
The Parsons Police Department is a service organization. To provide the best services to our community, the police and the citizens must understand each other’s points of view and work closely together to ensure the safety of the community.
The PCA is a 4/5-week program which gives our community members first-hand information on the role of police officers in the Parsons Police Department (PPD). The students meet every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Academy will start the first Wednesday, evening in September and finish the last Wednesday, evening in September. The program involves both classroom and interactive instruction. Participants are given an overview of information that governs law enforcement working at PPD.
The classes include:
• Overview of the Legal System - Criminal/Constitutional Law
• Overview of the Parsons Police Department – Organizational Structure
• The World of a Patrol Officer – Patrol Procedures
• The World of a Detective – Criminal Investigations
• The World of a Dispatcher - Communications
