Morning Fire Extinguished

09/19/2022

On September 17, 2022, around 7:51 am Parsons Police were notified about a possible fire in the 1200 block Briggs in Parsons. When officers arrived, it was discovered that the structure was fully engulphed.

Parsons Fire arrived and began working on the blaze while police secured the area. The fire was put out and it was discovered that the house was abandoned and had been red tagged by Parsons Code Enforcement. The structure was found to be owned by Robert Lemaster. Lemaster is currently serving time in prison according to the Kansas Department of Corrections website.

Parsons Fire requested a Fire Marshall for an investigation due to the suspicious nature. The fire investigator ruled the incident as an arson.

Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks stated, "while this investigation is on ongoing it is important for citizens to remember to call the police to report any suspicious activity. There are a number of people who are homeless and could be looking for a place to stay, abandoned structures such as this are prime targets. This is not to say that this was the case in this incident, as the Fire Marshall is doing the investigation. It just means that 'See It, Hear It, Report It' is still a great way to prevent and deter crime in the city."

The full Investigation has been turned over to the State Fire Marshall. It is unknown if the house was insured. This fire is not believed to be related to the structure fire from Friday September 16th at this time.

This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It." If anyone has any further information on this incident or any other criminal activity, please contact the Parsons Police Department at 421-7060 or call the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email at tips@parsonspd.com.
