Gunshots Lead to Arrest

03/13/2024

On March 10, 2024, the Parsons Police Department responded to reports of shots fired in the 3600 block of Gabriel at Prairie West Condominiums. Multiple callers alerted authorities to the sound of multiple gunshots in the area.

Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Frank Pousher encountered an individual, later identified as Johnathan Matthew Banning-Norris, 21 years old and a resident of Parsons, who approached him with his hands raised, admitting to having fired shots and claiming to have shot two people.

While Officer Pousher detained Johnathan, the investigation led officers to the apartment complex where Johnathan indicated the presence of potential victims. Despite thorough searches, no victims were found. However, evidence of gunfire, including multiple shell casings and a 9mm pistol, was recovered from the scene.

A safety sweep of Johnathan's apartment was conducted to ensure the absence of any injured parties. The Parsons Police Departments Investigations Division was called to assist in the investigation and subsequently, a search warrant was obtained and executed to gather additional evidence related to the incident.

Johnathan Banning-Norris was subsequently arrested on suspicion of Criminal Discharge of a Firearm (Recklessly Firing at an Occupied Dwelling), and Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm in the City Limits. He appeared before a Labette County District Judge, who set his bond at $25,000 cash surety. Johnathan was later bonded out on March 13th.

In response to the incident, Lieutenant Kyle Wiford of the Parsons Police Department emphasized the department's commitment to swiftly addressing such incidents and ensuring the safety and security of the community. Lieutenant Wiford stated, "The Parsons Police Department remains dedicated to upholding public safety and swiftly responding to incidents of this nature. We are grateful for the cooperation of community members and commend the swift actions of our officers in managing this situation."

This continues to be an on-going investigation and citizens are encouraged to "See It, Hear It, Report It." All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
